Moving Designs Between Editors

Which template editors a design can move between, what comes across when it does, and how Save as template keeps a copy of a design.

Work Planner Team10 October 2026

Each document template is designed in one editor: the drag and drop editor, the Simple editor or the HTML editor. Text messages have their own editor and stay there. You can move a design to another editor from the editor’s menu, after a warning that says what will happen to it.

The Moves You Can Make

  • Drag and drop to HTML: Open in the HTML editor turns the design into the HTML it prints. It can’t come back to the drag and drop editor afterwards, because HTML can hold things blocks can’t.
  • Simple editor to HTML: Open in the HTML editor turns the letter into HTML. You can bring it back to the Simple editor later, though only what a letter can hold comes back.
  • HTML to the Simple editor: Open in the Simple editor reads the HTML into a letter: its text, headings, lists, tables and images come across. Layout and styling a letter can’t hold are left out, and it arrives without a letterhead or footer, so check it before you save it.
  • Moves that aren’t offered: A letter or HTML can’t be opened in the drag and drop editor, and a text message can’t move to any other editor.

What Happens When You Move a Design

  • Nothing printed changes yet: The design goes into a draft in the other editor, and you’re taken there. The template keeps printing its saved design until you use Save & quit in the new editor.
  • Saving moves the template: Once you save there, the template belongs to the new editor, and opening it takes you there from then on.
  • Changing your mind: Discard unsaved changes in the new editor throws the draft away and takes you back to the template’s own editor, with its design as it was last saved.

Saving a Copy as a New Template

Save as template, in the menu of every template editor, keeps a copy of the design as it is now, unsaved changes included, as a new template. It asks for a name, suggesting the template’s own with copy after it, up to 100 characters. The copy goes in Your templates with the same document type, page size, layout, description and choice of printing or emailing. It isn’t the default, and it can’t be restored to a System version. The template you were editing stays exactly as it was, and you stay in the editor.
