Net Cash Flow Card
What the Net Cash Flow card means, why it can differ sharply from the Work Done card, and why it isn't your profit.
Net Cash Flow is the money you received in the Dashboard's date range, less the refunds you gave and the expenses you paid in it. It tells you how much more came in than went out, which is why it often tells a different story from the Work Done card. It isn't your profit.
How It Is Worked Out
- Money received: Completed payments dated in the range are the starting point.
- Refunds: Refunds you gave in the range are taken off.
- Expenses: Completed expenses dated in the range are taken off too.
- Not counted: Tips, payments still going through, and opening balances.
- VAT: For a VAT-registered business every figure is before VAT.
- Date-sensitive: The figure covers the current Dashboard date range.
Not the Same as Profit
The Profit and Loss Report works your profit out differently. It counts your income by your accounting basis: the money you received on cash basis, or the work you did on the accruals basis. It adds your tips to your income, and on the accruals basis it counts debts you write off as an expense. So the two figures can differ even for the same dates. Use Net Cash Flow for how much money moved, and Profit and loss for what you earned.
Where the Link Goes
Under the figure, Open Profit and loss opens the Profit and Loss Report for the same dates. The link only shows if your role can see reports.
How to Read It
- Higher than expected: Usually means payments are landing strongly against costs in that period.
- Lower than the work done: This is common and not a problem in itself. Work done counts work once it's done, while this counts money when it moves, less what you spent.
- Negative result: A negative figure, in red, means more money went out than came in for the chosen period. When more came in, the figure is in green.
